What do you do when you love your Heavenly Father & Savior, want to serve hopeful of attaining a higher perfection in accordance with the Gospel program as you understand it to be, have been brought up viewing the scriptures a certain way as a Mormon, but encounter someone who loves God as much as you who raises questions you never really carefully considered with any critical analysis or study? It is almost fearful for those of you who have been taught that anyone effectively raising serious questions to many of the things you hold dear is employed intentionally or unintentionally by the devil, and to politely excuse yourself under such pretenses. This line of reasoning is a self fulfilling prophesy designed to keep you from looking into such issues for yourself with objectivity because it is often assumed anyone who accepts the party line without tough questions is open to the Holy Ghost, but anyone who does not accept the party line without scrutiny is not. What if the person you just talked to during one of your home visits is not a messenger of the devil after all just because they might happen to be knowledgeable of the select Bible verses you use to guide people to your point of view and knows more about inconsistencies in your own heritage as a Mormon? What if the intent is clearly not to persecute? It is not that you feel you are wrong. That is unthinkable, and a very hard pill to swallow considering your family and personal investment in the Mormon belief system. You simply want to explore to set sincere misguided people on the right course in your view as a Mormon. More often than not, the Mormon elder in such a situation brings such issues raised during a home visit to an older member of their local congregation where they currently serve who merely reassures the Mormon elder in what they already believe to be true, etc. However, persisting in exploring the tough questions and subsequent questions that arise in your mind in response to the party line is often met with resistance. If fact, you may even find yourself reassigned, in part, to prevent you from developing meaningful relationships with others who love God, but can effectively challenge the party line. You see, serious verse by verse scrutiny in the light of Mormon history and internal source documents is unwanted. That is the way it is for many elders in such a position. Be assured, if you have tough questions and seek truth wherever that falls the true God of the Bible is bigger than all of that for He sees the intent of the heart. God loves your willingness to set time aside to serve Him, but He also loves it when we represent Him well in truth. How can you discuss matters you haven't explored yourself? He loves those, like the Barrens, who do the work to verify prophetic claims (Acts 17:11). It includes books that have been banned from you, but that you can acquire at a very inexpensive price for private study.
